As they say, “never three without four”, at least in a quadrilogy, here is the Highland Park Odin. Succeeding Thor, Loki and Freya, this 16 year old whisky was released in a 17,000 bottle edition. At 55.8%, it is the most “sturdy” in this collection. Aged in sherry casks and Hogsheads of second filling, all dressed in black, it announces a different profile than the others. Different AND better? We see that with the tasting notes 😉
Nose: The sherry casks have done their job and you can feel it immediately. Notes of raisins and spices invade the nose before being joined by these other typical notes of dates and figs. A hint of honey and smoke (well, it’s Highland Park huh) complete the picture.
Mouth: Raisins like found on the nose but more spices with a good dose of pepper. Some orange notes. More smoke, and more pungent than with the nose. Pretty raw.
Finish: A rather long peppery finish, with a small salty and smoky side.
Note: 87/100
A rather powerful whisky (especially) in the mouth, and not only because of its degree of alcohol, but also because of spices and smoke… to which are finally added only slightly fruity notes. It kicks me, I like raw casks, but this Highland Park Odin lacks a little complexity. So, Thor is for me the new King of the Gods. Sorry Odin, but we’re still friends, huh?
Well, sorry to say that you will only find it in a few shops or in auctions for minimum 400 €.
