We’re staying in the Valhalla collection with the 3rd of the name … The Highland Park Freya 😀 This whisky spent 15 years in bourbon casks of first filling. With an alcohol level of 51.2%, this whisky was apparently first planned to be used in a blend before they finally found it too good for this. I was curious to see if this Nordic goddess would bring a feminine and different touch to the collection, let’s discover that 😉
Nose: A very sweet nose, much more than what we’re used to smell with an Highland Park (I mean for their whiskys i’ve already tasted). At the first sip, I notice essentially pears with a tropical touch. Minty touches come after that, and some vanilla. A bit of peat adds some seaside feeling to this whisky, quite lightly.
Mouth: Like with the nose, it is a very fruity whisky. There are apples and pastries. Spices also and some light peat. I find this a little less successful than with his predecessors Thor and Loki. Although pleasant, it lacks a bit of balance.
Finish: Long finish, always fruity and with sweet peat smoke.
Note: 86/100
A different Highland Park, relatively elegant and a little bit surprising in the Valhalla range. I am maybe under the charm of the feminine touch brought by Freya. But not enough to totally forget its small lack of balance. But hey, it allows us to vary the pleasures and, again, this beautiful box makes its small effect on the poor collector I am :p
On his release date, the prices of Highland Park Freya already varied strongly from one seller to another, from €170 to almost 300. Add the usual speculation effect… But the prices seem to have decreased a little in auctions. But it’s still a little expensive for what it is.
