I’m testing another single grain, with some hope that this Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch (50%) will meet my expectations, and a little bit more than the recent Teeling that disappointed me a bit (I have to say that I expected a real good surprise). This one comes from the Kentucky Buffalo Trace distillery. A single grain coming from the country of bourbon just has to be good, isn’t it?
Nose: Bourbonesque as you wish (yes, “bourbonesque” exists… It doesn’t? I say it anyway), lot of vanilla and caramelized. But very much caramelized eh, almost as much as a Jack, a little more on the big butterscotch. A hint of raisins in the background.
Mouth: Outchi mama, powerful sensation in the mouth, a little too much, loaded with vanilla and oak wood. The toffee comes back and brings a little sweetness, a little. You should add a few drops of water that dissipate this alcoholic power and allow to develop some spicy notes, making it a little more interesting, a little.
Finish: Medium to long, always on vanilla and spices and always with this strong oak wood. A little acidity.
Note: 78/100
This Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch is not bad at all, really, even for me (have to say that bourbon is not my cup of tea). This is clearly not the most complex or original bourbon but it is still pleasant to drink. But, for an average price of 90 to 100 € most of people will probably prefer to buy something else.
I’m still looking for a bourbon that i’ll enjoy as much as a good single malt, if you have some to suggest me, I’m interested. That’s a real challenge :p
