If there is a real must-have bottle when you appreciate whisky, especially cask strenght, it’s the Aberlour A’Bunadh. Non cold filtered, aged in Oloroso sherry casks and bottled directly out of the barrel, it is a full of character Speyside that always pleases, whatever the batch. This batch #49 is nevertheless one of the best (at least of those that I’ve tasted). Here come the tasting notes 😀
Nose: As expected, with that kind of casks and its color, lot of sherry notes sherry. Very fruity, on dried figs and grapes in the foreground, then comes a touch of biscuit and oranges. Some pepper also. With a few drops of water, a touch of old leather and tobacco are also revealed.
Mouth: Well, with a degree of alcohol of 60.1%, we have to say that it is a drink for men (with all my respect, ladies 😐 ). The advantage is that it easily supports the addition of a few drops of water to reveal some additional aromas (and another advantage is that it lets you more to drink). Neat, which is perfect too, it remains soft and spicy, with, again, these beautiful notes of dried fruits like dates and apricots. Still these grapes with a touch of ginger. Excellent! With some water, the leather comes back with notes of oranges, chocolate and tobacco. It’s great when water tastes that good! 😀
Finish: Looooong and spicy, with a hint of oranges. Some dryness, it must be because of the water: |

Thank you Aberlour for offering us a so well balanced whisky! Victim of its success, this batch has become difficult to find (and if you do, the price will not be as great as it should), but the other batchs are of equal quality (or almost).
For a price from 65 to 80€, depending on the shops, Aberlour A’Bunadh is for me a must-have, a safe bet and the ideal candidate when we do not really know what to offer to an amateur (beginner or enlightened). No risk with this one! 😀
